Electric Guitar for Intermediate Player?

Hey,I have been playing an acoustic for about a year now, and I am looking to buy an electric guitar, but I am stuck on which one to get. I am a big fan of John Mayer, so I want to go with a fender, I just don't know if I should get the American or the Mexican Strat. I also want to get a pretty good amp,(any suggestions). Should I go with the American Strat, or the Mexican, is there much of a difference. Also, what Amps would work best. Thanks!
