I think this was a vignette from an anthology of vignettes, or short-stories, called "Tales of Manhattan" but it was Charles Boyer, not Maurice Chevalier. Made in 1942. All of these vignettes centered on a tuxedo that ended up in different hands. The one short-story I remember was with Edward G. Robinson.
