Fallout 3, a glitch or something in Big Town?

In fallout 3 on xbox 360, I completed the Big Trouble in Big Town mission, then I went on to other things, now I went back a little later and there are super mutants everywhere and none of the people are still there. Is there a reason for this that i missed, or is it a glitch?
